Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill

Last weekend, I attended the Opening of the London 2012 Olympics.  Apart from my amazing experiences at the Olympic venues, I also had a fabulous hotel stay.  Back in August last year, I wrote about the luxury hotels I had booked using PriorityClub points.  A few weeks ago, I changed my mind about the length of my London 2012 stay and shortened it from 9 to 3 nights.  If I would have booked my hotels in Aug 2011 on the best available prepaid rates (which were as high as £450 per night), it would have been impossible to shorten my stay without a penalty.  This is a huge advantage of booking with points: You can cancel your reservations up to the day of arrival (before 6:00 PM local hotel time) without penalty.  Note: Make sure to check the cancellation policy for each points booking you make.  Some properties impose a more strict policy (e.g. the IHG French Polynesia resorts require to cancel a few days in advance to avoid a penalty).  But in general, you can cancel point bookings and have the points returned in your account instantly without any penalty!  Also make sure to have separate reservations for each night you book with PriorityClub points, even if it’s a seven night stay at the same hotel.  This will allow you to cancel certain dates of your stay without cancelling the entire booking.  It might be impossible to make a new reservation using points at the time you want to make changes.  IHG hotels are required to release at least 5% of their room inventory for PriorityClub bookings, but once those are gone, it might be impossible to book on points. Also, canceling a room reservation booked on points doesn’t necessarily mean it’s being added back to the inventory of rooms  bookable on points.

Finding my way from the Eurostar St. Pancras International station to the hotel was easy, as Aldgate tube station (Circle line) is on walking distance from the hotel (note: Aldgate East station also is nearby).  To my surprise, enthusiastic front desk staff member Tamara spoke fluent Flemish, my first language.  She had been living in Antwerp (Belgium) for 10 years where learned both Dutch and French.  As PriorityClub Platinum member, I was offered a complimentary dessert or glass of wine at the hotels restaurant ‘Square Mile Kitchen & Lounge’.  Internet access was complimentary for all guests, and so was the minibar!

On my first two nights, I didn’t receive an upgrade and was assigned Superior room 506.  It was one of the smallest rooms on the 5th floor (plan), still spacious enough to move around comfortably and it was a corner room.  As I felt ‘home’ at Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill, I decided to cancel my reservation at Radisson Blu Edwardian Mercer Street (booked on Club Carlson points) and to stay a third night at Hotel Indigo Tower Hill.  For my first two nights, I had burned 25K points per night as they were booked back in Aug 2011.  Unfortunately PriorityClub devaluated their points in Jan 2012 by increasing the number of points required for a free night at many of it’s prime properties, including Hotel Indigo Tower Hill (now 35K).  At least those extra 10K points were rewarded with an upgrade to a King Executive room (406) on the 4th floor (plan).  The Executive room was much more spacious than Superior room 506, still it had exactly the same size on the floor plan (4 vs 5).  The bathroom at the Executive room also had nicer walk-in shower and the TV was placed on a drawer instead of being mounted on the wall.

Conclusion: I had a fantastic stay at Hotel Indigo London Tower Hill during the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Weekend thanks to the well appointed cosy rooms and the outstanding staff.  Even at 35,000 Priority Club points, I can highly recommend it!

36 hours in Venice (Italy)

Venice, my fourth Flyday trip, short but intense!  Left Brussels on Friday night 7.30pm and returned on Sunday morning 10.25am, just in time to run the Antwerp 10 Miles.  As usual with the Flyday promo, the return flight was €99.  The outbound flight on Friday was overbooked as the previous Brussels Airlines flight to Venice had been cancelled due to a technical aircraft issue.  This resulted in a Business Class upgrade (better food!) for myself and four other passengers.  At the gate, €250 vouchers were offered to passengers volunteering to take the next flight to Venice.  I declined the offer, as my original trip was only 36 hours and I was traveling with a friend.

To ensure a convenient transfer to and from the airport, I chose Crowne Plaza Venice East-Quarto d’Altino,  a 10 minute shuttle ride from Venice Marco Polo Airport.  The hotel is not at the ‘island’ of Venice, instead it’s located on the mainland next to a small train station called Quarto d’AltinoFrom early in the morning till late at night, at least once an hour, a train connects Quarto d’Altino with Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia.  The 20 minute ride costs less than €3 and brings your directly to Venice, without the need of taking a water taxi.  What made the hotel even more attractive, was it’s listing on the PriorityClub Point Breaks list for Mar-May 2012. Instead of the usual 25,000 Priority Club points, only 5000 were required for a free night.  As I booked last minute, the free rooms (5% of the hotel inventory) for Saturday night were already sold out.  Friday night was free, Saturday night was paid.  The best available rate for Saturday was €90, which I lowered to €75 using the Friends and Family rate.  As a PriorityClub Platinum member, I was upgraded to a superior room for both nights.  The shuttle service from the airport to the hotel was free on Friday night, but unfortunately fully booked on Sunday morning.  The private shuttle charge was €35.Pic: Piazza San Marco – Orchestra Gran Caffè Quadri (Apr 2012)
So how was our stay in Venice? Wonderful!  Sunny all day long, strolling along the canals and admiring the beautiful squares and buildings.  People spotting at San Marco square while enjoying overpriced drinks.  Listening to the Gran Caffe Quadri Orchestra for which a €6 per person ‘live music’ charge was applied to out bill.  It’s all part of the Venice experience!  ;)   All pictures in this blog post were made by my lovely travel companion, Sabrina.

My one night stay at InterContinental Paris Le Grand in March of this year was one of the most impressive room upgrades I ever got.  I had booked a classic room and was upgraded to the Royal Opera Suite (2100)  Initially I had only access to the bedroom and bathroom of the Suite, but when I returned to the room in the late afternoon, I found the door opened to the full Suite.  Handwritten welcome cards of the Marketing Manager, Hotel Manager and General Manager were placed on the table of Royal Suite Lounge area.  The Marketing Manager wrote they were delighted about my “great tweets” and “to ensure you even have more opportunities to share your experience at Le Grand, I have asked housekeeping to open the door to the full suite and extended Club access on the 5th Floor”.  Incredible how much value Twitter has produced for me in the past four years!

On Saturday November 4th, my Lufthansa Airbus 380 flight from Frankfurt arrived at Singapore Changi Airport around 5pm.  My next flight (Tiger Airways to Cebu, Philippines) was on Sunday morning at 8am, so an airport hotel wasn’t a bad idea I thought.  Turned out, it was an excellent idea.  I had seen the appealing look of Crowne Plaza Changi before when transferring at SIN and after reading several reviews (incl. Ben’s OneMileAtATime review) I knew I had to visit it.  As Crowne Plaza Changi is a rather expensive property with rates between $250 and $400 SGD, I had chosen to burn 25K PriorityClub points on my one night stay. (25K points equals +- $150 USD)
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a friendly front desk staff member who performed the check-in formalities and prepared my room key in less than a minute.  I was informed as PriorityClub Platinum Member I had been upgraded to a King Suite.

The Suite was lovely: modern interior which felt as new, living room with sofa and tv, large working desk, second tv in bedroom, spacious bathroom with great amenities and a plate of French Macarons as welcome gift.  Check the video below for a walk-trough of the Suite.

Another amazing feature of this exceptional airport hotel is it’s stunning swimming pool.  It must be one of the most spectacular airport hotel pools in the World.  The hotel also offers Spa treatments at The Aspara.  Conclusion: Crowne Plaza Changi is an excellent retreat to relax and unwind after a stressful or long flight to Singapore.
