My early FRA-LHR flight (6:55am) combined with Lufthansa’s strike on Sep 7, offered a great opportunity to shoot some pictures of Lufthansa’s largest airport lounge without it being crowded.  Lufthansa Senator Lounge B (located at Terminal 1, departure area B, opposite to Gate B42) opened in July 2011.  Apart from all you’d expect from a premium lounge, it also features a wellness area (Senator Spa) with luxury facilities that include ten showers and two spa rooms.

Another addition to the Senator Lounge is the City Lights Bar where a bartender is in attendance to fulfil guests’ requests for drinks and mix cocktails.  You would like to enjoy this lounge too?  Access rules can be found here.

Upcoming Lufthansa Business Class trip to Seoul

Pic: Brussels-Munich-Seoul-Munich-Frankfurt-Brussels in Lufthansa C Class

Pic: Bart and South Korean School kids in Seoul (May 2008)
Back in November, Lufthansa was running an incredible sale on Business Class flights.  On 11-11-11, Business Class fares to several destinations (e.g. New York, Dubai, Singapore, Seoul,…) were only €1111.  As I was enjoying the Plantation Bay Resort in Lapu Lapu (Philippines) on 11/11/11, I postponed booking my ticket to the evening, which was noon time in Germany.  By then, the Singapore A380 business class seats were already sold out.  As destinations like New York and Dubai only made half the status miles compared to Seoul, I booked the latter.

Pic: Miles and More Mileage Accrual for my Lufthansa Business Class flights
To maximize my mileage accrual, I added an extra leg MUC-FRA on my return instead of the direct MUC-BRU flight.  The layover between ICN-MUC and MUC-FRA will only 35 minutes, so I’m not sure if I’m going to make it.  The extra leg added €38, but should earn me 1500 status miles (+ Senator bonus) in exchange.  My €1156 (includes €7,50 credit card fee) Lufthansa Business class round trip to Seoul (Feb 25 – Mar 4, booking Class Z) should earn me 30661 status miles.

For my first 5 nights in Seoul, I’ve booked a studio apartment in the Itaewon district.  I used Airbnb, a rapid growing global network of accommodations offered by locals, to make the booking.  It’s a cheap alternative to hotels, especially in big cities.  The studio apartment was +- €30/night + a €15 Airbnb booking fee.  With a €30 Airbnb coupon code I lowered the bill to €137 for five nights!  Unfortunately, the €30 coupon code is no longer valid, but if you sign-up with my Airbnb referral link, you’ll get $25 credit for your first Airbnb stay.  By the way, if you want to be up-to-date with all the latest travel coupon codes, discounts, error fares, promos and deals, make sure to follow me on twitter.  For my last two nights in Seoul, I booked the Grand Hyatt using Gold Passport points.  I’ll have a separate blog post on the Grand Hyatt Seoul after my stay.

With my Lufthansa Business Class flight to Rio de Janeiro earlier this month,
I complete my challenge for Star Alliance Gold and unexpectedly enjoyed the new Lufthansa First Class.  Last week I received my Senator Welcome Package in the mail.  For the next two years (until 02/2014) I will enjoy the following benefits:

  • First Class Check-in: Even when flying economy class
  • Lounges: Access to all Star Alliance Gold lounges and the Lufthansa Senator Lounges
  • Priority Baggage Handling: Red luggage tag means bags are the first to be delivered to their destination
  • Increased Free Baggage Allowance: Increased by one piece or 20KG
  • Golf and Ski Bags: One golf bag and one ski bag free of charge
  • Waitlist Priority: If no more seats are available on your selected flight, as Senator you will enjoy higher waitlist priority.
  • Booking guarantee: If you reserve your flight in the highest-value booking class up to 48 hours before your journey, you will receive a booking in the travel class of your choice even on fully booked flights.
  • Upgrade vouchers: With initial appointment to Senator status and every time your Senator card is renewed, two electronic upgrade vouchers are credited to your account.  You can use these vouchers to travel in the next higher travel class.
  • Companion Award: Book an award for your travel companion for 50% fewer award miles.
  • Mileage Advances: If you don’t have enough miles for the award of your choice, you can overdraw your mileage account by up to 50,000 award miles.

Lufthansa First Class Lounge A at Frankfurt T1

Upon arrival in Frankfurt, after my unexpected First Class flight, I headed to the First Class Lounge at Concourse A.  My layover in Frankfurt was limited to one hour, so I didn’t have the time to visit the First Class Terminal.  The lounge is located near gate A26 where you need to take the escalator to level 3.

Entering the lounge I was welcomed by a friendly staff member who verified my boarding pass.  As I had upgraded last minute to First at the gate, I was still holding a business class boarding pass.  The First Class receptionist entered my ticket number in her computer and confirmed I was a First Class passenger.

The lounge was very quiet with only 3 other passengers present.  I was offered a glass of champagne and asked permission to shoot some pictures of the lounge.  Spent my remaining time discovering the different areas of the lounge.  I hope you enjoy my picture report.

New Lufthansa First Class on A340-300

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class on A340-300 (Dec 2011)
When boarding flight LH501 (A343) from Rio de Janeiro (GIG) to Frankfurt (FRA) on Tuesday December 6, I expected to see the ‘old’ First Class cabin from my seat 3H in Business Class.  To my knowledge, the new Lufthansa First Class cabin was only available on the A380 and some of Lufthansa’s 747 aircraft.  One of the pursers must have noticed my interest for First as she immediately approached me after boarding.  I told her I was surprised to see the new First Class on this A340-300, I wish I had upgraded using miles, I said.  To  my surprise, the purser said she could still go back to the gate and request my seat to be upgrade to First.  I handed over my Miles and More FTL card and off she went to the gate.  A few moments later, a gentleman of the GIG ground staff wearing a United lanyard approached me and addressed me by name.  He requested my Miles and More PIN code to confirm the upgrade.  Ten minutes had passed and boarding was almost completed.  All Business Class seats were taken but only two out of eight First Class seats were in use.  The Chief Purser introduced herself and confirmed my upgrade was successful.  She handed over my boarding pass with my new seat, 2K.  It felt quite awkward to take my bag out of the overhead bin in front of all other business class passengers to then move to First Class.

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class Cabin on A340-300 (Dec 2011)
The look and feel of the First Class interior was stunning.  A great improvement in design, materials used (a lot of soft leather) and a much better color scheme compared to the old blueish First Class.

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class – Ottoman on A340-300 (Dec 2011)
I wasn’t comfortable taking out my big DSLR camera to start shooting pics of the cabin interior, instead I used my iPhone 4s.  Unfortunately boarding was already completed by the time I ended up in First Class, so I had only a few moments to shoot some pics of the cabin interior.  As this was a nighttime flight, and one of my fellow First Class passengers wanted to go to bed immediately, the cabin lights were switched off for the whole duration of the flight.  This made shooting high quality pictures very hard.

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class Inflight Entertainment on A340-300 (Dec 2011)

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class – Inflight Entertainment (Dec 2011)
The inflight entertainment system offered the exact the same content as in Economy and Business.  As I’m a frequent Lufthansa flyer, I had already seen all movies and documentaries of my interest.  Too bad the selection in First Class was not more extensive.  I also experienced a slow responding menu navigation and found the screen resolution too low for the 21 inch screen.

The seat was very comfortable and controls were intuitive.  It also featured a Privacy Screen which I used when in full flat bed mode.

Pic: Lufthansa First Class – Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones (Dec 2011)
The Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones did a great job, I even slept with the headphones on.  I found them filtering the noise much better than regular earplugs.  On my next trip to the US, I’m going to buy a set of these, as they are retailing for $299 in the US and a whopping €349 ($464!!) in Europe.

Had two glassed of this excellent champagne.  It was the only available brand during this flight, no Krug, Dom Perignon or Louis Roederer Cristal.  I don’t know much about wine and didn’t drink it on this flight.  A great selection of spirits was available: Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7,  Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Bushmills Malt 10 Years Old, Cognac Lheraud Cuvee 30, 2002 Alter Birnenbrand, 1998 Etter Zuger Kirsch, 2007 Late Bottled Vintage Port, etc…

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class on A340-300 – Caviar (Dec 2011)
Another exceptional experience for me was the Caviar.  This must be the first time I had real caviar.  It was served with traditional garnishes and the best toast ever.  Loved it!  The Salad with Parmesan was nothing exceptional, the Pan-fried Salmon Trout with Lime Butter, Lentils and Spinach by Chef Alfons Schuhbeck rather disappointing.  The Opera Cake, on the other hand, was delicious.

After dinner, I asked the purser to convert my seat into a full flat bed while I changed into my Lufthansa pajamas in the restroom.

Full Flat Bed (Dec 2011)
The bed was very comfortable and offered me the best night of sleep I ever had on a plane.  Two hours before arrival in Frankfurt, I requested breakfast to be served.

Pic: New Lufthansa First Class on A340-300 – Breakfast (Dec 2011)
Conclusion:  This flight was an amazing experience and I’m up for more.  I paid 70K miles for this upgrade (from Z to F) and I’m glad I did.  The Lufthansa Business Class product is rather mediocre compared to the First Class product, so whenever I have the opportunity, I’ll upgrade to the new Lufthansa First Class!

Lufthansa Welcome Lounge Frankfurt

This morning I had the pleasure to enjoy a heavenly shower and breakfast at the Lufthansa Welcome Lounge at Frankfurt Airport (also know as Lufthansa Arrival Lounge) Entry conditions to the lounge are quite strict, see this Welcome Lounge Access Quick Reference Card.  As Lufthansa FTL (Frequent Traveller) arriving from Singapore (A380) I was granted access to the lounge along with +-40 other guests.  All 28 private bathrooms were occupied at 6.15am on Monday morning, but after 5 minutes of waiting I was assigned shower number 13.  All bathrooms have L’Occitane Luxury amenities and clean towels.  No extra’s like hair comb, toothbrush, dental kit, etc… so make sure the bring your own.  Not sure if there are larger bathrooms for HON Circle members, First Class guests and Senators, but they do get an extra which isn’t available for FTL members: free ironing service.  The bathrooms are located in the basement, on the entrance floor you’ll find lounge facilities similar to other Lufthansa Senator lounges offering hot and cold breakfast dishes incl. pancakes and eggs to order.  WiFi is free, as in all Lufthansa lounges since July 2011.
