On Friday June 1, I joined inaugural flight SN501 from Brussels to New York JFK. I flew economy class and was seated on the first row (14D) in Y. As frequent Brussels Airlines flyer (almost weekly now thanks to their Flyday promo) and Miles and More Senator, I was upgraded* to business class on the return flight from JFK to BRU. Both the hard and soft product were outstanding. I think my pictures speak for themselves regarding the quality of the hard product. The only two negative experiences I had during the BRU-JFK-BRU journey were out of Brussels Airlines control: A queue of almost three hours (!) at JFK Terminal 1 Immigration to enter the USA and a 1,5 hour queue on the JFK runway before take-off back to BRU. Not sure what’s wrong with JFK airport, but I hope they fix these issues soon!

Remark: I’ve put quite some effort in providing you with high quality pictures of the new Brussels Airlines hard product. I’ve not posted all pictures I made during the flight, if you are looking for a specific detail (e.g. seat control instruction card) feel free to ask in the comments section of this post. Thank you.
*Full Disclosure: I flew on a paid Economy class ticket (BRU-JFK-BRU) which I booked on the announcement day of the new Brussels – New-York route (Dec 27, 2011 €399 booking class K). I flew Economy class (seat 14D) on the inaugural flight SN501 BRU-JFK on June 1, 2012. Brussels Airlines offered me an upgrade to Business Class (seat 4K) on flight SN502 JFK-BRU to allow me to review the new Business Class product.

Hello,
1,5 hours of queue at the runway is quite normal at JFK during peak hours.
Yesterday afternoon, I personally made 55 min due to :
- push back delay to let the Lufthansa and Alitalya pass behind
- during taxi, we have been number 25 down to the runway 22 and even with a departure each minute, it took times
Brussels Airlines is not able to avoid the normal queue….
Wow, impressive… I recently flew with Emirates and it reminds me of te same standard of quality. The food (as presented in your pictures) actually even looks better than emirates. Can’t wait to travel with Brussels Airlines again…

seriously? 3 hours???? normally we try to get out of the plain as fast as we can! if you are lucky, you are the first flight to arrive and you are in front of the row! we did not have any queuing at jfk so far! at EWR we had a one hour wait because the immigration service guys were having lunch!
I have my business class seat for July 6th from JFK to BRU. I am glad to see the planes are ready. I was a little nervous. Thanks for the pic.
The bed mode of Brussels Airline’s business class seat looks really claustrophobic! It looks like a bit more than half of your body is inside the shell of the table / armrest for the 2 seats in front of you.
I imagine you need to put the seat back into normal mode if you want to get up for any reason. It also looks a bit fiddly for the person sat in the window seat one row in front / behind you – they not only have to negotiate getting out of the claustrophobic space but also clamber over the person next to them, who’s seat is also in bed mode, to get to the aisle. There’s also not much space to maneuver past the table / armrest.
Maybe it’s just the impression I get from the photos.
